A 1, a 2, a 1-2-3...ooops!

(Hmmm...maybe that wasn't such a good idea. What to do ah?)

I like Pak Lah. He is a Prime Minister with an honest face. Okay, so there are people who believe that he's done shit since he took over from the other fler but that's a subject for other bloggers.

This morning I heard on the 9 o'clock news over Traxx FM (RTM's ridiculously named English language radio station) that Pak Lah had announced last night in Bukit Mertajam that he'd allocated RM20million to redevelope his alma mater, the Bukit Mertajam High School. The P.M. also announced also announced an additional RM3.5 million for the restoration work for the Block C of the Bukit Mertajam High School. What the ^*&$#@@#!!!

RM23.5million to redevelope (what does that mean anyway) a school? And the money is going to come out of the 9th Malaysia Plan funds. To say the least this is untimely isn't it? All that money for one school while there are hundreds which don't even have electricity? All that money for one school while the people of Johor are still drying out their lives?

Okay, those of you who mourn the demolision of Bok House in Kuala Lumpur recently read this and cry some more..........

"We have decided the school heritage should be retained. At least Block C should be restored with the original look just like before. Therefore, the government has allocated RM3.5 million for the restoration work so that it will look good like so many years ago," he said in his speech at the Bukit Mertajam High School Reunion Dinner.

Like I said, I like Pak Lah. But man! His timing could improve some.

Niamah!!!

I think you have been too kind. Bearing in mind that this is the same person who tells students to think outside the box, he really should be kicked in his hoary nuts for committing such huge public funds on one school. Dimwit.

well, at least it's his school and not his house or some white elephant.

as for those johor folks... they should look for their champion, the ghani dude.

Question must be answered.

1. Who is the contractor for the job and who is the real benefiacy of the contractor?

2. What are the specs of the school building and are there necessary and relevant?

3. Perhaps who are the sub-con, sub-sub con, sub-sub-sub con, etc for the project.

If a house that 'was just a rich mans house', even though he helped create the blueprint for the bus transportation service, was not worth saving....man RM500k would have been enough to keep bok house around....
So...23.5m for a 75 year old school...that would be rounghly RM313333.33 per year for its existence...then a school like St Johns (102 years old)..should get an allocation of RM32million!!
Bro Lawrence Spitzig dedeicated his life to the c=school , and still continues to provide vital support to villages in Sabah interior...
I doubt St Johns will even see RM100!
from an Old Johannian ( i think St Johns has gone to the dogs...really)

Hey Patrick....I just googled the school, High School Bukit Mertajam...882 vistors to the website!...how many other old boys are there ? I think this website was just created too....9MK to help Bukit Mertajam contractors maybe?

Dont be like that lar...
BM High School is my school too....
I would love to see it become like Putrajaya....hahahaha...

patrickteoh said...

What I didn't understand was his reason for giving the money to the school. He said it was a heritage school and had been churning out model citizens. That would hold true for some of the missionary schools too. But these have to beg and scrounge for money for maintenance etc. I mean a good school is a good school, right? If BMHS is worth preserving then let's draw up a list of other schools that are deserving too. Especially now with all the talk about cluster schools and whatnot.
Doesn't make sense. Niamah!!!

Yet another reason for denying the BN their two-thirds majority in the next general election. Let's take back some say in how our and the nation's money is spent.

Well put, PT. To say that it's lopsided is putting it mildly. If there is a good reason, the public ought to hear it. The earlier reasons given dont hold water.

Niamah..For 2 years I have been bombasted..insulted...rediculed by commenters at MT blog and I accepted them because I always protected Pak Lah whaterever the blog owners out out...101% anti Pak Lah and the commenters keep $#$^* him !! RPK has even blogged me and few others out!!
In Sheih's 'kickdefella' it is very much more cultured people there...but I know few disguised with another name to also insult me whenever I defended all nagtives remarks against PM. However Sheih has always let me in.
In Rockybru...very similar to MT insults and irritating remarks. I took them ALL and kept faith I am doimg the right thing ...as Pak Lah ...like Pat said do have an honest and down to earth face and the way he went about doing things are acceptable by me at least. So I absorbed all the insults thrown at me for more than 2 years...feelingb proud to defend Pak Lah.
NOW FOR THE FIRST TIME I AM BEGINNGING TO BELEIVE HE IS NOT FAIR AND MANAGE THE COUNTRY THROUGH HIS LIKES AND DISLIKES. I HOPE I AM WRONG!
But to announce such an enormous amount to restore HIS OWN SCHOOL..shows he is very short sighted and lack of gOod sense.
I ONLY HOPE HE WILL SAY HE WAS MISQUOTED AND LESS ONE ZERO ON THE AMOUNT. COVER UP BY ALL UMNO POLITICIANS DO.....THEY NEVER APOLOGISE OR SAY THEY ARE WRONG...ALWAYS MISQUOTED!! SO WAITING HE SAYS HE WAS MISQUOTED!!
No matter what..if that amount is true...I declare openly I will vote against Barisan in the next election. Hope millions will follow...for it is time to cut them out doing as they like....when millions in Johore are suffering and after that...RM bilions should be allocated to build dams....dykes all over Johore State to ensure such floods will never come again like CHINA.
WE MAYBE VERY RICH UNDER HIS STYLE....BUT THIS IS NOT THE WAY TO SPEND our money!!What will next new PM do....if he is from another school??
I am trully sad to read that in papers and am glad Pat brought it out.
PAK LAH...WITHDRAW YOUR STUPID ANNOUNCEMENT......MEANT ONLY TO PLEASE YOURSELF.

Traxx FM really sounds like 'Trash' Fm.

I wonder do Pak Lah know that there are still many schools in the rural/smaller towns which have been waiting for money from the government to fix their building(which are not maintained for decades) so that their teachers/students can have a safe environment(ex. the case where a teacher falls down from 2nd floor due to termites problem)

what the hack is wrong with you Pak Lah? Even the most idiot of all peasants like me know that the johorian need those 23.5 million than that school. 23.5 million! For goodness sake, we are talking about having not enough food and clothing and all those stuff for flood victims and now you allocate 23.5 million for a school alone! ALONE!!!! what about the other schools??? Do you know how many schools in Johor are being flooded? Dont you think those schools need restoration as well?

This is sickening!

steve...I think PM knows and so are most Barisan ministers...but playing dirty politics and how to convince the half past six to vote again and again for them is their priorities.....not the welfares of the country.
TDM from Kedah developed Pulau Langkawi. Before doing so.....Diam and him make sure they own as much land as possible.
Abdullah Bedawi is from Penang province that includes Bukit Mertajam.
Do you think both seriously care and love the sufferings right at our doorsteps at Johore?? They talk so much justice for other muslim countries being bullied by USA. What hypocrites!! JUST VOTE THEM OUT IS THE PERMANENT SOLUTION.....if they do not wish to change at all.

and you took the words right outa my mouth regarding the RM20 mil for HSBM.... what the *&^%$# is goin on here? am i missing something?

NIAMAH! it IS therapeutic! NIAMAH!

Traxx FM has an identity problem la. Every other minute they have station identification to 'excite' and reassure themselves, and irritate listeners. Lost souls.

Blok C has got 'cultural' and 'heritage' value becoz Pak Bolah wuz there. Bok House sounds like Pork House and only some 'unimportant' Chinaman stayed there, so no cultural or heritage value. City Hall tore the place down for the trustees for free when it was declared unsafe (for whom?). Now they can build a multi million dollar complex that will enrich a lot of people.

No consistency or good reasons needed. Just stupidity.

Need Amah!!

I liked him... 3 years ago when he won the election with so many promises.

But not now.

Too many indications in his actions and policies, that showed he is not going to deliver the promise... the clean, efficient and effective government...

I was wondering what if we can have the stronger alternative coalition to form the government in the next election and give BN a run for their "$$$"...

- no harsh action on Zakaria and closer one eye MP
- no news on the establish of independent police forces review committee (so called IMPC??)
- toll increase
- fule price never drop back after recent $50 per barrel...

and a long long list which i can't remember...

and now >RM20 million on his old school?? where does the money? I rennovated my house for much less than that :-)

by the way, I used to listening to your radio talk show...but no longer now...not sure if you are still active in DJ or any other talk show...do share a bit in your blog if possible.

Adrian said...

if repair, then i understand, but rm20mil? so i expecting theres a crime lab like csi, or a missile defend system.

rm20 mil just to restore one school? reason: cez this school dhurn out role model? the choong hwa high school must be national treasure.

how are u expecting students to think out of box when the exam system is so predictable? so the education system suddenly has no role in training the students to think, but to show how they vomit their test book? u've been teaching 1+1=2 for so many years, now u expecting students to give diffrent answer?

so many things to be done, why that?! to contractors: so many way of doing businesses, why govment money?! we entrust our money to the govment. america have been slacking behind in funding for science and engineering research, we floowing that too?

I dunno about you! If I defend someone, I would have to know that person so that I can explain his motives.
Lets analyze this a little, shall we?
Restoring old schools is a noble act.
Why? Education is the foundation to knowledge, hence having good schools and restoring the pride with it is indeed a good move. Lets just stop there. Someone has forgotten to inform YAB, PM that to have good old buildings restored also need good (not necessarily old) teachers! We need good old intergration (same like his time in school!) and not those that we have today, racial segregation! Agama class, whilst those with other beliefs are left to the POL (peoples own language class!!) WHy can't we have Agama Class / Cathecism / And Sikhism / Hindu class all at once? (in their respective rooms off course!) Dont' use excuses like there are no volunteers / teachers to teach. This little steps in introducing segregation is the very ills that our children have to grow up with!
Oh, sorry no racial undertone here, but merely a point!
On the subject of heritage, hmmmm,
has anyone even noticed the state of La Salle Brickfields? Ooops sorry, different league, no ministers from that school! Did't St Johns sell their padang to raise funds? What the hell happened to the OBA at the end of the field! Conveniently forgotten, no more place to call home!
To be noble, practice it without agenda!
I am seriously thinking of bailing south, that is probably the easiest country to get in !

I'm from Bukit Mertajam, and I can tell you that it's really ridiculous to spend that amount of money on Bukit Mertajam High School (HSBM) because ONE, it's still in pretty damn good condition coz they just did some renovation and came up with a whole new block not long ago, and TWO, that school isn't exactly one of the best schools around. Allocating such a huge amount of money for them would just be silly, because knowing HSBM, it's just going to make things look all pretty (like how they just did their fencing and made a new parking lot! woo hoo. chopped so many damn trees) and not benefit the students in any way related to education at all. If they can deliver in terms of performance, results and achievements then fine.. but they don't.

Why not give the money to other schools like Jit Sin High School (also in Bkt Mertajam) instead? Jit Sin's old, and they have so many students.. their classrooms are so small, and their furniture older than the oldest furnitures in schools around Bkt Mertajam now. They barely have enough funds to do any renovation to their school.. but this is the school that has been ranked one of the top schools of this country, and always churning the country top scorers and what-nots.

BM High School? What a waste of money.

And I'm not being biased. I actually lived there, and every single male in my family attended BM High.

patrickteoh said...

Thanks mushkin for that first hand account of the HSBM. Does raise some questions doesn't it?

Hey j, maybe you need some time la. Niamah is more addictive than pussy? LOL.

Hey alliedmaster, I heard that St John's too received some millions courtesy of the DPM. Can anybody verify this?

Tzeyang, no I have not done any radio for more than 10 years. But thanks for remembering. And thanks to Jude Manickam too.

RM23.5 Mill? I wonder who did the budget for this project. Where in the world the figure came from? Now I wished I worked for the public sector instead if preparing budgets is as easy as plucking figures from the sky...

A few years ago, our Old Boys association, VIctoria Institution, a former premier school in KL had to come up with money to donate to the school to buy ceiling fans and whiteboards....basic school stuff....Ridiculous to now learn that Pak Lah is going to give millions to his old school....really NIAMAH!!!

Thanks to Pak Lah for his contribution to his alma mater. Infact, i'm also from the same school. I really hope to see this school pioneered the education in Malaysia and set the benchmark.
