Are you mad as hell?

Somehow, the situation in Bolehland today reminds me of a scene in the 1976 film Network. It was a black comedy. In it the character Howard Beale (played by Peter Finch) has this classic monologue. Read it. It's scarily relevant......

Howard Beale: I don't have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It's a depression. Everybody's out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel's work, banks are going bust, shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter. Punks are running wild in the street and there's nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there's no end to it. We know the air is unfit to breathe and our food is unfit to eat, and we sit watching our TV's while some local newscaster tells us that today we had fifteen homicides and sixty-three violent crimes, as if that's the way it's supposed to be. We know things are bad - worse than bad. They're crazy. It's like everything everywhere is going crazy, so we don't go out anymore. We sit in the house, and slowly the world we are living in is getting smaller, and all we say is, 'Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms. Let me have my toaster and my TV and my steel-belted radials and I won't say anything. Just leave us alone.' Well, I'm not gonna leave you alone. I want you to get mad! I don't want you to protest. I don't want you to riot - I don't want you to write to your congressman because I wouldn't know what to tell you to write. I don't know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians and the crime in the street. All I know is that first you've got to get mad.
Howard Beale: [shouting] You've got to say, 'I'm a HUMAN BEING, Goddamnit! My life has VALUE!' So I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window. Open it, and stick your head out, and yell,
Howard Beale: 'I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!' I want you to get up right now, sit up, go to your windows, open them and stick your head out and yell - 'I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore!' Things have got to change. But first, you've gotta get mad!... You've got to say, 'I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!' Then we'll figure out what to do about the depression and the inflation and the oil crisis. But first get up out of your chairs, open the window, stick your head out, and yell, and say it:
Howard Beale: [screaming at the top of his lungs] "I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!"

Every time I open a newspaper and read how politicians deal with challenges by intimidation and violence I have this terrible feeling that we're sliding backwards into the Dark Ages.

To all Malaysians. Let's go to our rooftops and shout - WE CANNOT TAKE IT ANY MORE. FUCK YOU.

I would prefer everyone shouts : "NIIIIAAAAAAMAAAAAAAAAH" 3 times, simultaneously thrusting your fist upwards. Middle finger erect also OK for better effects.

Its good for the lungs. Its good for the soul. Its good for the spirits there be. You will feel better for about 10 secs and then its back to usual. But you can do it again and again especially in traffic jams.

(PS You got visitors reading from Perth. Bapok La and his family must be sneaking in a read).

Supremacist Bigotry: Who Can Defend Us?

Posted on July 22nd, 2007 by nathaniel tan

Much said on the case of Najib, Hisham, Islamic States and high-handed threats.

The question on my mind is simple: who can defend us? If a secular state is what we believe in, who will stand up for it?

Can MCA, Gerakan or MIC stand up for it? We’ve seen what happens when they try. Do you think MCA is going to openly defy Hisham? Nobody’s stupid enough to believe that.

Let’s briefly examine Hisham’s calculations in this matter. He must have been perfectly aware that he was creating massive intra-BN tensions and that he was going to cost BN/MCA a few seats at least.

Did he care?

Not one hoot.

Hisham wrongly believes that the BN grip on power is unassailable. But he rightly understands that only Umno is worth anything in this ‘coalition.’

He’s perfectly happy to sacrifice some BN seats if it means strengthening his own intra-Umno position in the run-up to the Umno elections. After all, that’s where the only avenue to real power is.

What can we do as Hisham and gang conspires to screw us over?

It is pivotal to realise that MCA/Gerakan/MIC can’t do diddly squat in the face of big brother.

I truly appreciate the support of certain BN individuals, but as far as I know, none of their politicians came out to publicly defend me while I was in prison. Same is going to be for this Islamic state business.

And if you don’t dare criticise Umno and their arrogant bigotry in public, what good are you? Working ‘behind the scenes’ so as not to piss off your masters means perpetuating their ill-conceived supreiority complexes. Don’t be fooled into thinking that all Malays are so arrogant- that’s equally racist and inane.

The BN formula has steadily and brutally destroyed race relations in this country, just ask any old timer. It needs to be thoroughly replaced wholesale.

If not, these issues will be continued to be played as pawns in internal battles within the Umno hegemony, and it is the whole of Malaysia that will be wrecked. Vote BN out!

Yeah yeah, the coalition party is crap..maybe it started off in the beginning with very noble intentions, and the pioneers carried it through commendably, however, the predecessors got greedier and greedier as time went by. Nothing can satisfy their thirst and hunger for their own material self fulfillment. Then one day, along came a bunch of people who claim that they want to do something about the whole crappy situation...reformasi la whatever la..but till today, why haven't they triumphed? Maybe God knows they are not sincere either..many many agenda up their sleeves in the end..only our voices keep barking at the injustice remain..but we are dogs..those in power ..the mountain...haiyaa why so pesimistic maaa

Go shout from the rooftop and deliver this message to Umno - We have had enough of lies, stupidity, hypocrisy, bigotry, idiocy.

Be it UMNO, MCA, Gerakan, MIC, PAS, PKR or DAP...all these political parties are only after their own agendas and the people in it are only after power, fame and money. How many politicians are honest and truly want to serve the people? At best, not more than ten, at worst, none! I am certain many Malaysians has had enough. I have had enough. But will all the shouting and cursing change a thing?

patrickteoh said...

No opalyn. Shouting and cursing alone will not change a thing. But standing up for your beliefs and exercising your vote will. No need to change the world la. Start small. In your community, your constituency, your state/local council. Don't take things with a casual "Aiyah, never mind la." Never minds were what got us to this state in the first place.
