Only in Malaysia, folks!

The house that Zak built.
(photo scanned from The Star Metro section page M6. October 12, 2007)

I almost couldn't believe my eyes this morning when I read The Star. There on the front page of the Metro section was a picture of the luxurious, suspiciously legal edifice that was the centre of controversy not so long ago. Actually, the headline reads, "Datuk Zakaria's mansion opens its doors".

What the hell is this? Have we come to this now that we celebrate the deeds of suspicious characters whose slate has not totally been wiped clean even by the clever use of technicalities and perhaps his 'contacts'?

Inside, The Star treats us to a gallery of this man's audacity in sticking his finger up against all that is just and legal in this country as he took reporters on a tour of his house. A master bedroom with jacuzzi. Swimming pool. Gazebos. Mini golf course. 21 rooms! A house that not so long ago was allegedly built without the necessary approvals and with the assessment not paid.

And this is the most tragically funny part of the story. Apparently, this man invited 400 orphans to spend a night in his palatial mansion and said that it would become an annual event. Are Malaysians so easily 'bought'? Here, some crumbs for you. Now piss off and be glad of it. That's the message that's coming across to me. I wonder what the orphans thought?

Oh but wait...it says here in The Star story..."Due to the controversy over the building of the mansion, Zakaria, who succumbed to the mounting pressure, had decided not to continue as councillor for the 2007-2008 term."

Well, terima kasih banyak banyak, Y.B. And you have a good Raya in your mansion ya? Don't choke on the rendang now.

NIAMAH!!!

Once upon the 80s, a group of Basildon lads sang "Everything counts in large amounts, the grabbing hands, grab all they can, all for themselves, its a competitive world . . .".

Little did Depeche Mode know that their little ditty would come to define the Malaysian mentality some 20 years later.

Patrick, why do you think I THREATENED God to let Tun pull thru. We need a compass to get us thru this
near-decadent times. At least HE listened. The BN don't only dont listen to us...they condone this idiocy. Strange that only the Star has for a couple of times featured this crook. Has he got them by the balls? I only read the Star on Wed. and alternate Thursdays....and only online. I dont read sycophantic drivels.

zorro, much as many Malaysians now wish Tun still held the reins I think we should let go. He's had his time. He deserves the rest and time with his family. We must fight our own battles. Yeah you're right. How come only the Star carries stories about this moron? Drivels? If you don't read that got what to read somemore in our papers? Did you read the lyrics by Depeche Mode above there. From the 80's but prophetic.

Hey Penang kia, you mean they really checked up on you because you bought a house? I thought that was only an urban legend.

Anonymous, there is nothing wrong with a railway gatekeeper making good in Malaysia. That's not our point.

How can anyone in authority break the law and get away with it? Lagi chia lat, others will make excuses for you. I think the shit is all over, no one dare to stir the shit tank lest the smell fill the whole country. I mean, pot cannot call the kettle black right so who in power dare to take up the issue! Only the clean and powerful can but these two words dont go hand in hand very often in Bolehland does it?

We kena chiak sai with such people in authority.

As an aside, this article relates to your latest one on "encouraged to leave la". That is why he has decided not to continue as councillor for 2007/8 term la. Perhaps he has been encouraged to leave. What do you think?

Eh Patrick ah,

Got any info on how this railway gatekeeper made so much money ah ? I must learn from these flers lor. I am just selling DVDs now.

What business did he start ? Did he go to business school ? Which one? School of hard knocks ah ?

How long did he take to be so kaya one ? 5 years ? 10 years ? 20 years ?

Must learn from hom because he must be doing everything right. No ACA investigation, BN inquiry, PAC inquiry, not even Star newspaper inquiry.

How can I be rich like him ?

How appropriately said "NIAMAH! NIAMAH! NIAMAH!" I woke up to my routine checking emails and reading your articles and guess what? I lost my mood and appetite! Using orphans to seek approval? How low can one be? If that is even a ONE!
NIAMAH NIAMAH NIAMAH!

Niamah is the most appropriate word to describe the whole datuk zakaria story. I have many more expletives zig zagging between my brains and the tip of my tongue, but i think i'd just stop at that.

The existence of Datuk Zakaria, and many more, slightly cunning than this arrogant stupid idiot, is the reason why we should REALLY think before we vote.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm just jaded of eating shit served on a silver platter....(probably just silver plated platter come to think of it).

What is wrong with us malaysians huh? How could we tolerate such characters? Blaaaady arshlore!!

aiyah, this fler frightens the goment : try me i will leak out all the shits of others, let us DIE togather, just TRY ME ...!!!!!!

BenZ said...

OMG! This is just so blatant! It's almost as if this fler is going "Nyah-nyah, try to crucify me? See? I'm still here with my big nice house and hey! I'm throwing a party as a way to show the big finger at all of you too!"

Disgusting...

But I'm going to look at the fact that he's featured in the papers as a good thing. If the Star didn't publish this in Metro, none of the smart readers would have picked this up and seen it for how ridiculous it is!

I agree with you Patrick. It's a slap to our face. Why give credit to someone who has so obviously 'abuse his powers in administration'? I guess Star has nothing news worthy to report.
