Did you know this?

(My favorite photo of RPK)

When I visited Malaysia Today today I was most pleasantly surprised by Raja Petra's article entitled, " How to strike back and counter the sabotage". I have reproduced that part of it which I thought was so damn good an idea.

"I urge all Muslims to pay their zakat and fitrah in any one of the five Pakatan Rakyat states. Are you aware that you can pay zakat in lieu of your income tax? And you can request that your salary be deducted monthly and the money be sent to the state zakat office instead of to the IRD. No, it is not exemption from tax like if you were to donate to a tax-exempt charity. It is zakat in lieu of tax. That means when you pay zakat you need not pay income tax.

Say you have to pay RM1,000 income tax per month on your salary (or RM12,000 per year if you pay annually). You just pay the money to the zakat office instead and send the receipt to the IRD and consider your income tax fully paid.

Why do this? Well, when you pay to the IRD, the money goes to the Federal Government and Umno will use the money. But when you pay zakat the state gets to keep the money and in the five Pakatan Rakyat states for sure Umno will not be able to get its hands on the money.

Think about it. Zakat is mandatory under Islam. So you will be fulfilling your Islamic duty plus you will be helping the five Pakatan Rakyat states plus you will be denying Umno that money. That’s killing three birds with one stone.

Okay, zakat is only 2.5% of your wealth (zakat harta) or income (zakat pendapatan) while income tax is higher. So, pay the higher figure. After all, you will have to pay it anyway whether you pay zakat or income tax. And imagine how many poor and destitute people, the homeless, students who need financial aid or scholarships, orphans, single mothers, old folks who can’t work, handicapped people, etc., can be helped with this zakat money."

Isn't that like a stroke of genius? I think our Muslim Malaysian brethren should seriously think about it. In fact, if there was something like this for Christians I'd switch over instantly. Up until the time I read this RPK post I only had one genius in my circle of friends. Now I have 2. Well, sort of friend la since I have never met RPK in person. Damn good la. Tabik, sir.

Patrick,

Of course you have met RPK umpteen years ago, in the 70's, during his and our bike riding days. When you were in Redifussion and I was in Ash Wednesday.

RPK (also known as Peter) is my brother and I am Raja Idris Kamarudin (also known as Yea).

We must all be getting old, to forget.

Patrik, you can become a Muslim Mah! Same God !

The country needs policemen, doctors, nurses, teachers and schools more than it needs mullahs and mosques.

That one can fulfill a religious obligation at the expense of the greater communal good....

That one could advocate asking his neighbours of a different faith to pay to keep his roads clean, police his home, educate his children and cure his infirmities....

And that all this could be done with you supporting it....niamah indeed.

I beieve that income tax and zakat from individuals constitutes a small proportion of the Govt's income as opposed to Tax collected from businesses and corporations.

The mega bucks is still in the Fed Govt's hands. Therefore the Fed Govt must be stopped from frittering away precious revenue like:

1. Privatising cash cows like highway toll, IPP's, water, sewerage treatment, Halal licensing and inspection etc businesses. State Govt's can manage these.

2. Subsidising 'projects that must not fail' like Proton, MAS, PKZ. Leave this to the private sector.

3. Wasting Petronas money on Monsoon Cup etc. Despite $7.6 billion dispensed in 3 years, Terengganu is still the poorest state.

There are many other areas. But these will do for a start.

I thought that it's common knowledge that you could opt to pay zakat instead of income tax? Oh well.

Eh, you can still switch over, la, mr Pat. Potong sikit nia...

indeed this is brillant! Can the states start one for non-muslim? I don't mind switching over. at least my money remains in my state to start with. Pat, you should read his latest. sure gonna start a forest fire!! it appears that Karpal's tiff with HRH of Perak is nothing compare with the power that be behind the curtain's tiff with HRH of Selangor!! Things have really gone into someone's head. having the audacity to rebuke a Ruler!!!
Even AAB's predecessor ta'berani macam ini!!

Brilliant idea from Pete but only our Muslim friends can do that now. If only we can do that as well.

Buddy Patrick,

Raja Petra later article claimed that RM200 million was stolen from the zakat collected by the Selangor State religious body. Guess they have to do some housekeeping work to rid the Dept of Barisan sympathizers before it's safe to do so.

My Muslim friends have been doing this for some time.
Non-Muslims, there is no "Zakat-type" thing in lieu of Tax that I know off. Anyone know of one, pls tell us.

I agree that personal tax is small potatoes compared to corporate tax.

Too bad RPK also questioned the accounts of these authorities. You should really know who to give your money to. For example, i won't give my money to Mercy Malaysia but red cross,ok.

Figured this out last time. Just sad that I can't get any tax exemption for my contribution to church. But my money is for God.

For non-muslims... you can pay donations to organizations where it's tax deductables...

BTW.. corporations can pay zakat and donations that are deductable from their tax... too... Companies can do the same as the individual too....

When PAS controlled Terengganu, the Kharaj Tax was similar to this concept.. only just RM5 per person... and the monies will be used for non muslim usage only - charity, religious and helping poor non muslims... but somehow, it was shut down by non Muslim and BN parties from being implemented....

Dear Pat,

It was nice of you to post this! I missed this article. RPK's brilliant suggestion and I have already spoken to some of my Muslim friends. Surprisingly, many did not know that!

Cheers and Regards

Been doing this for ages. But in a BN controlled state like Johor, NIAMAH!!!

p/s Corporations can pay their business zakats too. And that too stay in the state. Not many Muslim conglomerates though. Most are state owned or owned by cronies. DOUBLE NIAMAH!!!

Hi,

Figuratively speaking of course, allow me to play the devil's advocate. This seems like a fine idea, but there are a few things that bug me about this idea.

One, zakat is generally a tax solely for the purpose of giving to the poor. But income tax is used for the government to use it for whatever projects, such as building roads, parks, etc. It's not solely for helping the poor.

And Two, it requires a lot of trust in your government. How will you know that those gov't in the PR states will actually use the money for the it's intended purpose? Not to say that PR is at all like BN/UMNO, but it's still susceptible to corruption like any other political party in Malaysia, needless to say the rest of the world as well.

But I digress, because i'm not a Malaysian citizen :P, so i don't know how that zakat office works. If anyone can correct me on this, that would be great.

Salam

Pat, I agree with his points but at the same time I got a news about Zakat has been manipulated in Selangor. How true? Then to who we must believe now?

Actually Zakat and Cukai are both mandatory during Khalifah Umar Abdul Aziz. Both need to be paid. But as he said we can reduce the cukai amount by ppaying zakat. Which yes zakat is one of the 5 pillars in rukun islam.

Again, who to believe? sigh.

seriseroja said...

tarings, u can always switch your payment to ANY puzat zakat of your choice regardless of your whereabout. Been paying to Kelantan though living in selangor (yes, bcoz of misuse by those dirty hands!) Now that selangor is already in the good hands of new government, i can always switch to paying to selangor...

Pat, an eye opener to the public. tq..

Been doing this for quite some time already...I can't stand the fact that my hard earned money goes to the UMNO flers...the money i earned working overnight (err..in a non harlot sense of it), the time i spent in traffic jam going and coming back from work, especially before and after the bloody toll. At least the chances of the money being misused is less than the well established corrupted UMNO flers..makes me sleep better at night too...;->

Hey Uncle Pat!

How you doing, man?

Been a while since I dropped by the blog.. good to see it's up and runnin' again.. and your NIAMAH postings!! Woohoo..

I liked the RPK article about how we have NO intellects in our government. Nice read.. quite true also, I feel.

Anyway, I'm trying to follow what's been going on from afar, literally, and it's pretty crazy, man. I don't know what's really happening back home, but I can feel the bad-ness of it, even here. Only can pray that it'll work out for the best. Feel kinda useless also.. not sure what we can do to change things.

Anyway, just wanted to drop a line and say hi! See you in a couple of weeks, hopefully. Will be back for summer holidays (before I'm really away for the whole year, at least), hope to catch up with you or something. Take care.

JULES
