What the )*)*(^%%#$^#@!!!

Deterioration of a brilliant mind.

I have received comments that accuse me of being unfair to Dr. Mahathir by using only excerpts of his blog post. You can read the whole thing here.

Today's big story for me is from the blog of Dr. Mahathir Mohd. .......

"Openly the Malays have not attacked Chinese racialism as manifested by their practical rejection of the use of the national language, their rejection of the national schools, their Malaysian Malaysia slogan."

When I read that I was shell-shocked for almost 5 minutes. As a Malaysian I couldn't believe that I was reading something like that from an former Prime Minister of my country.

"......Chinese racialism as manifested by their practical rejection of the use of the national language, their rejection of the national schools, their Malaysian Malaysia slogan."

HUH???!!!

So sad when senility takes over a once brilliant mind.

Read the full report of his views here and Dr. Mahathir's original writing here.

So Tun Dr M believes that the Malay race is being attacked by others who espouse a Malaysian Malaysia.

A leopard does not change its spots and one can understand why Tengku Abdul Rahman sacked Tun Dr M from UMNO back in the late 60s and also why his book "The Malay Dilemma" was banned then.

The direction that Tun Dr M was envisaging was diametrically opposed to what Tengku Abdul Rahman's vision of a multi-racial country.

Perhaps, one should re-examine the 22 years of Tun Dr M's reign where he has shrewdly manipulated the NEP to benefit one strata of the Malays while handing out crumbs to all others. In doing so, the judiciary and police all succumbed to his control. Hence, we have present issues giving these institutions a bad name.

I am sad because he now shows that he is not FOR a Malaysian Malaysia. We've been taken for a ride, folks.

I bet this Lau Beh is trying to stir the hornets' nest as he knew that his power now is totally handicapped.

He is infact trying to create animosity between the Malays and the Chinese so that another 513 is in the coming.I hope that the people do not fall prey to this cheap-skate politics which is already outdated now.

I don't think so and you can keep asking me and my answer will be I don't think so. You and me can do what he had done, money, power,Liar, crony, you name it and I think you know it, so what is the hype for this old man. patrick,

this is not deterioration of mind. he is just giving you an insight of his racist thoughts. Do you remember what he said in one of the forums organised by UMNO this year. It was utterly a bigotry speech.
Enough said about him. Think its important that if we dont want to get overrun by racists in this country, its time for us to engage and not be a silent majority. Its time to engage by showing our support to the leaders who promote Bangsa Malaysia.
This is our country and only one. may God always bless this country.

- BN made Bahasa Malaysia compulsory for all students.
- BN made Bahasa Malaysis the medium of instruction from secondary scheool.
- BN made passing Bahasa Malaysia at SPM compulsory in order for one to further his/her study, including admission to local university.

But we comply with all the requirement above. We studied Bahasa Malaysia and gained the required proficiency. How can Tun M say we reject Bahasa Malaysia?

However, it is our choice to learn and master our native and other languages to stay relevant in the competitive world. Bahasa Malaysia has little economic value outside Malaysia.

It is OK to just confine your language mastery in Bahasa Malaysia if your mission in life is to acquire knowledge & understand the world by purely reading Kosmo/Harian Metro/Berita Harian/Utusan Malaysia and watching RTM/TV3/NTV7/TV9.

The world is flat. We want look up to blue ocean strategy. We do not want to be 'Katak di bawah tempurung'. We do not want to be jaguh kampung & syiok sendiri with our local benchmark (The incredulous Malaysia book of records)...

We do not want to be myiopic and narrow in our mind.

Wake up please!!!!!

Hi,
I am a Malaysian and also a Malay. I am in a deep need of a Bangsa Malaysia. I do wonder why do we still need vernacular schools as it seems to me having these racial based schools are among the reasons why there is still no Bangsa Malaysia. I am sorry if I am not being sensitive or something like that. This is why I am asking why do we still need vernacular schools when it is one of the reasons of division in the Malaysian community.
In my opinion, instead of having specific vernacular schools, we should open the teaching of different languages in national schools such as chinese and tamil. This in my opinion may allow a more united Malaysia.
I am not anybody who knows everything about Malaysia. Any guidance and explanation is highly appreciated.
Thanks:D

Pick from Dr. M's blog....

Quote: "21. The Malays have seen what has happened to the Malays of Singapore and they have no desire to be like Singapore Malays."

The truth is as I have spoken to many Singapore Malays (work-related contacts), is NOT what Dr. M claims. Singapore Malays have NO desire or whatsoever to be like Malaysia Malays (Umno Malays to be exact) either. Singapore Malays have dignity and work hard and work smart, they don't like and don't want hand-outs. They are successful through hardwork. Don't believe...bring Umno Malays to Singapore and talk to them.

Quote: "22. So their reaction is to seek for Malay unity. They feel threatened, and their fear is real. Admittedly there are among the younger educated Malays a few who claim to reject Malay unity. But these people do not represent the vast majority of the Malays."

They don't feel threaten, it's bullshit. If you talk to Malays not Umno Malays, many don't buy the idea that NEP has reaches them after 51 years of merdeka. Malays who really work 9-5 jobs will tell you it's better to work and make a decent living than waiting for hand-outs.

As for UNITY, every race concerned can champion their own unity. Nothing is wrong with that. In the end, we all can collectively work for Malaysian Unity. But, stop and look who are behind all the racial talks or become racist???

Senile dickhead..sorry, is that a four letter word..no its a four letter word X 2. A leopard can't just change his spots. After Malay Dilemma the most racist book ever written in Malaysia, the thoughts of a racist former PM has not changed. Now we can see the results of his racist policies which has continue to drive Malaysia into a third world country. If we don't change we will end up like Zimbabwe. Yes, there the whites were labeled the "pendatangs", drive them out in yr 2000 and instituted the NEP like ours and the result is...5 billion dollar for a loaf of bread.
Unemployment,Famine,Sickness, very high infant mortality you name it.
If you still label the Chinese as pendatangs, just like the whites in Zimbabwe, they just pack their bags and go. We are already heading that way..US$1 was about RM2.20 now US$1 is RM3.50. And US is in a Recession......Guess where are we heading. Oh ya...Zimbabwe is also very rich in natural resources.....

Dr.M distinguishes between Racialism and racist.

Thus if by Constitution, you adopt a Nazi philosophy, and then exterminate the Jews and start World War 2 and 100 million perish, you (& Hitler or Stalin et al)cannot be charged with crimes against humanity or anyone.

So, the BN policy of each component dealing only with its turf is not seen in Dr.M's eyes as racist only racialism. Thus such spin-semantics form the corner-stone of a mind in a state of denial.

But you are wrong. This is not a new sign of senility. It is all there in the Malay Dilemma penned some 40 years ago!! Read it from cover to cover and you will discover the true Dr.M as he was from day 1.

25. If we still want Malaysian Unity we need to be willing to make sacrifices regarding what we consider to be our racial rights. Everyone has to do this. The leaders must be given some mandate to discuss these matters in private and to make concessions. After each step the lower rung leaders of each race must be given full briefing as to why the concessions have to be made. It would be useless if they don't agree.

26. Provided we can roll back the present unhealthy trends and redirect it towards more positive non-racial objectives, provided we do this slowly by small steps we may be able to create a truly Malaysian identity where race would gradually become less important. It will take time but with sincerity we may reverse the present trends and move towards increasing co-operation and integration.

For Dr M to say that Malaysian Chinese had rejected the use of Malay as the national language is wrong. Dr M is also wrong to criticize the Malaysian Malaysia slogan.

However, it is true that Malaysian Chinese has rejected national schools. At least 80% or more Malaysian Chinese parents send their kids to Chinese primary schools (Sekolah Rendah Jenis Kebangsaan) instead of national primary schools (Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan). As a Malaysian Chinese who attended a Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan, I was shocked at this statistic as well when a friend who attended a Chinese primary school told me of this statistic. Come to think of it, most of my younger cousins actually attend Chinese primary schools instead of national schools, which does not help foster national unity. Then again, part of the blame also lies with inconsiderate national school administrators who push a Malay instead of a Malaysian agenda.

To be frank, the Malaysian Malaysia slogan is too strongly associated with Lee Kuan Yew and Singapore. There is no love lost for Lee Kuan Yew among quite a number of Malaysian Chinese. LKY isn't an angel either with his autocratic ways. He destroyed the life of socialist activist Chia Thye Poh (look on wikipedia) by confining him in his entire life to Sentosa Island. Poor guy, never had the opportunity to marry, start a family or pursue his dreams. Dr M may be an authoritarian, but he has never been as cruel as Lee Kuan Yew in destroying his enemies.

I do not reject Bahasa Malaysia (got an A2 for it).

I do not reject Sekolah Kebangsaan (I studied in two, 1 primary and 1 secondary)

I consider myself a Malaysian, never a Chinese when I address myself to foreigners.

But the government wants me to address myself as Chinese. All the Malaysian government forms for application of everything required me to state my race.

I have never talked about Ketuanan Cina.

I have many Malay, Indian and other races friends. We treat each others with respect.

I only want our government to be fair, just, honest, accountable, transparent, free from corruption.

I believe many Malaysian Chinese share my view and belief.

Unfortunately, I think that there is some truth in what Dr M says..

Things during your time, and even my time, are different from what reality is today.. 90% of the local Chinese send their kids to Chinese schools today.. The national schools are virtually devoid of Chinese students, unlike how it used to be in the past.. Most of the products of the Chinese schools then struggle with their use no Chinese languages as evidenced by the fact that the Tan Hoon Cheng has to provide an impromptu second press conference for the other vernacular press reporters.. So, what DrM says is not without some evidence..

Granted, it's not a very PC thing to say but who are we kidding here, it's DrM!!

Yep, you are a racilist because (a) you did not change your name and (b) you did not change your race. Patrick you are a racialist, unlike Tun Dr Dato Sri Mahathir Kutty who was an "Indian" when he applied to join University of Singapore but later became a "Malay" when it suited him more. He also "rejected" Indian language, culture, identity, etc. He is not a racialist. That's true. That's also why you cannot get a copy of his birth certificate or even his university application form even though after so many years both should be in the public domain.

Mahathir never had a mind. He is not and never was an intellectual -- only a technician, like a monkey trained to pluck coconuts. That may be one reason why he ignored the Constitution and refused to tolerate any dissent. He is not senile...just stupid.

Please don't used vernacular education as an excuse for current state of M'sianhood, ok?

Yr reasons r skewed.

In the first place why do the non-Malay send their children to vernacular schools?

The biggest pit-fall is the standards of the srk/sm. On top of that u have the super-imposed religious issues, such as all policies within the school covers with only muslim in srk/sm. What happened to the rest of the non-Muslim, non-Malay? R they transparent?

The non-Malay r very pragmatic. Going back to the 60s & early 70s, the vernacular schools were almost dying, with all the parents sending their children to English schools.

Then thanks to those umno bigots, the situation change!

R u two really that ignorant of the 'history' of M'sian education?

Translation fr english to study a subject i think is only kidding ourselves la. Maybe you are right to do it that way but as for me, i rather have my children study all those subjects in english and also study the malay langguage.

Penulis, to be proud of our national langguage and our country, we must have policies that unite. It has to start fr kinddy. If we have current system then you expect NS to help unite us, you must be dreaming la. It will never work, not during my lifetime.

Penulis,

Either u r still single w/o school going children or u don't really care about yr children's schooling!

Let me enlighten u.

Therer 'reputed' srk/sm arounds, their numbers are 'limited'. These schools get all the best facilities & teachers. Most of them r former missionary schools that got converted into srk/sm through 'whatever means'.

If yr children r schooling then u will know. U don't easily enrol into these 'kawalan' srk/sm w/o connections. For non-Malays the chances r limited even with good results, to say the least.

The standard of majority of the srk/sm r really telur. The disciplines are bad from both teachers & pupils. & to the majority of the non-Malays the attitudes of the school authorities really sucks.

One non-Malay perspective about srk/sm might be wrong, but if 99% follow the same trend then there must be something right.

Of course if u factor in the religious bigots that been running around those srk/sm then u should get the big picture.

So u really don't know that thanks to those umno bigot the dying vernicular schools got a new life since the late 70s!

U r really living in a cocoon & yet u wanted to know w/o first understand the causality by yr own research.

Yet when someone enlighten u, u turn to be doubtful/chauvinistic.

BTW many of u forget that english school is also a form of vernicular school.

Many of us has a mis-guided understanding that vernicular schools are associated with Chinese/Tamil medium schools. Very wrong!

Anonymous said...

chow kit boy, that shows that malays are willing to learn about chinese language. I really dont agree with setting up of racial schools like chinese and tamil schools. all should compulsory go to national schools.
i dont want to be racist, but chinese are racist too and so are the indians. i believe in a national view and common collaboration... i saw an old malay couple standing but no chinese young guys were willing to give the poor old couple to sit. how rude. so dont just look into one side. other races are also guilty for this. dr m have point. if u dont want to talk about race, then we should use a common national language in everyday usage and that is bahasa malaysia. no more chinese and tamil or islamic school. fair enough. im in for it... are most others into it...sadly no!

Assalamualaikum wr wb,

Dear Tun Mahathir,

I think you under-estimate the will of the Rakyat to dismantle racialism. In this era of global competition and high technology - for how long can UMNO shield the Malays from the reality of a free market ?

You cannot hide the shortcomings of the Malays. No one stops the Malays from acquiring technology. You yourself sent thousands of Malays to study overseas. Yet where are the returns on your investment in them ?

Think of Proton - shouldn't your Malay engineers work double hard to improve their products like the Japanese ? Malaysia has lots of flora and fauna. Shouldn't the Malays dive into Biotechnology on account of Malaysia's flora and fauna ? Yet where are the Malay scientists etc ? For how long can you evade the shortcomings of the Malays ?

You see - Malaysia is not unique in this matter. The whole Muslim world faces the same problem. Muslims simply do NOT do enough to chase after and acquire technology ! Indeed - there are no industrialized Muslim countries except possibly - Malaysia !!

The NEP and Ketuanan Melayu has been around a long time. The Malays should have used the opportunity they had wisely. Sadly - your own UMNO abused it ! Now the Rakyat wants an end to racialism.

So yes - you are right. The Malaysian Malay is going to suffer because they no longer have the crutch. But thats Malaysia's problem.

What I hope is that you and other Malaysian politicians had better not demonise Singapore in the process. You and others better not look down on Singapore Malays.

We Singapore Malays can hold our head high and proudly so. Because we achieve on merit and not quota. Its a real achievement.

Well - its your country and not mine. I think that you first have to deal with the reality of Pakatan Rakyat.....

Best Regards

So rejection of national schools is a sign of racialism? Has Tun consider the quality of our national schools? As I know, many ministers kids study in international schools, even the kids of our DPM and our education minister. What has the Tun got to say about that?

What is so wrong with Malaysian Malaysia?? Conversely, a non-Malaysian Malaysia would spell an overdose of racism, I believe.

Mahathir started racial polarisation and kept it up, now he is again doing it.
What are the Umno govt waiting for - ISA him NOW!
During TAR days all races lived together in peace and goodwill, and harmony, but when TDM took over - Malay supremacy, bumiputras, NEP, stupid divide and rule.
With this idiot is office for 22 years - see what we end up with - More shit now.

If anyone think I am wrong - just ask why with all our natural resources - oil, rubber, tin, palm oil - are we not well ahead of S'pore.
In fact we should be on par with S. Korea, or at least Taiwan.
Down with Umno/BN rule.

Let a DAY arise with PR Fed. govt!!!

what tun said is correct what. even among the chinese also, the ones who had chinese educated background look down on otehr chinese without the chinese education background.

we cant deny this very fact. not fair la to achieve malaysian malaysia when we keep on defending the so called chinese schools. in a multi racial country like ours with the malays as the majority, it is only fair to have a base benchmark in education.

national schools.

to continue dividing the people with calls to embolden the chinese schools will only drift the people further apart.

malaysian malaysia is only possible if everyone speaks the same language. look at indonesia and thailand for example.

maybe ur the one getting senile patrick. or have blindspots.

The population size of M’sian is Malay 50.4%, Chinese 23.7%, indigenous 11%, Indian 7.1%, others 7.8% (2004 est., source CIA factbook). So the non-Malay M’sian actually constitutes 49.5%!

In term of religion profile; Muslim 60.4%, Buddhist 19.2%, Christian 9.1%, Hindu 6.3%, Confucianism, Taoism, other traditional Chinese religions 2.6%, other or unknown 1.5%, none 0.8% (2000 census, source CIA factbook). So the non-Muslim actually make up 39.5% of all M’sians!

Many of us have a mis-guided understanding of NATIONAL unity. & for that matter – patriotism!

Must national unity/patriotism means every citizen speaks ONE language, confess ONE religion?

NO.

There can be unity in diversity, when the country has sizable minorities like M’sia.

It’s not wrong to have multi-national languages within a country. Switzerland has proved it. To certain extend Canada has proved it. Multi-national languages can be the binding force to unit the country, if every citizen is multi-lingua.

The side effect is that we will be having bigger employment opportunities for our citizen, besides better inter-racial understandings.

It’s a non deniable fact that a vernicular school leaver is much more marketable, domestically & internationally, than a national school leaver, purely by the fact that the former is multi-lingua as compare to the later, who is most likely mono-lingua. Both of them can speak equally lousy English, or as someone might falsely claim that the national schoolers can speak better English & be more sociable(??)

What is education if we don’t prepare our youth to face up to the challenges of the new world order? We r denying our youth the opportunities if we don’t teach them to be MARKETABLE. So to all those Malay M’sian please go & look up what marketable means, ok?

Whether we like it or not multi-religions will be the order of the day in M’sia. I’m not questioning the status of Islam, neither am I emphasizing the role of the other religions as has stated in our Constitution.

The way those religious bigots are moving, points to the fact that M’sia should be a mono-theological setup. This is wrong & against all religion believes, including theirs!

To paraphrase the language issue, it’s just like saying that all M’sians must be Muslim, in order to be patriotic. Was it not the mono-linguists constant insidious demand that all M’sians must speak the national language? Yes, speak we do & yet to the extent that they subconsciously demand ALL speak just one language! Where is the logic?

For once look at the facts of life, if not the numbers. U want to continue living in the cocoon? By all means do it to yourselves & leaves us, other M’sians, alone to do things our ways. Period.

Some of us are too simple in our thoughts. DR M is just who he is, behind the face of pluralism. He will not be saviour for multicultural Malaysia, and will not celebrate his return to fascist UMNO.

I speak BM and many languages. That is the Malaysian identity when others view us. Of course, many also notice that less number of people are able to speak good English.( but that is an imperialist language! bla) Am proud to be from SRK school but understand that the quality of education in my old school has droped so much that I would now consider sending my kid to vernacular school. The Wawasan school is a failure, so do many other education policies. that is why our BN leaders send their children to international schools.

Can Chinese be racist and not Malay? No. Can anybody be racist? No . Can Dr M be racist?

Malaysian style - Pretend to be literated, disagree with others statements but never leave their names.
Malaysian Style - Good in back stabbing and hide themselves in the bush.

I am so ashamed to tell foreingers that i am Malaysian although this is a fact (I travel aboard every month). TDM is really too old and should enjoy the balance of his days. Why is he still bahaving like a racist when he has retired? He already has billions of ringgit in his swiss acc and has achieved his purpose "pretending to protect malays rights" but his motive is to protect his corruptions rights. If TDM is still so energetic, please open a mamak shop and sell roti canai....

Chinese should learn how to speak chinese language and so do indians. This is not racist. This is a multi-races and multi culture country that attracts a lot of tourists. Stop claiming Chinese and Indians are racist for protecting their own mother toungue. The person who make this statement is definately a "katak di bawah tempurung" Shame for him.

Does he wants to abolish Chinese and Indian culture? Then what is so special with Malaysia after all other cultures are abolished? Are we still a nation with multi culture and races? What'e the different between us with Thailand and Indonesia? What will happen to our next generation?

Tourist will prefer to visit Thailand for that is Paradise for sex hahaha and Indonesia because the islands there are superb. Tourists will never chose malaysia bcoz of it's expensive living expenses and dirty tourist spots. Wonder what happened the the millions of ringgit given to tourism ministry to promote malaysia's tourism? No results at all. Just like AAB and his cronies. CAPABLE MOUTH BUT DISABLE BRAIN.

For those who insists that TDM is still their hero and disagree with any statements here, please post your comments with name. If you are not bigot and the statements you made is nothing but the truth, why don't you put your own name? What are you afraid of? Uncle patrick will not go and burn your house or kidnap your mother?

I have many Singapore Malay fans.
They do not feel marginalized, even though there is no NEP for them. They are proud to be able to compete without given any 'handicap' to improve their living.

Dr M should get his facts right. He is envious of Lee Kuan Yew's success. He tried to incite the Malays with the wrong facts.

After 51 years of Merdeka with so much privatisation projects going into the hands of bumiputera, why do they still feel underachieved? Their share of equity should be higher than the 18% that has always been underdeclared.

Perhaps Dr M should revisit his 'theories' as expounded in his 'The Malay Dilenma' book written in the late 60's. I suggest he use his free time (before getting more senile with age) to write a sequel to 'The Malay Dilenma' to explain the true reasons of their 'backwardness' despite so much that hat been accorded to them. He should not try to impede the progress of others under the pretext of NEP and Ketuanan Melayu.

To me, the national school concept is a good idea. But why do our government allocates huge amount of resources into building MRSMs, instead of upgrading the existing national schools?

If we were to scrap vanarcular schools, I think we should also include MRSMs and boarding schools in the list!

So can someone tell me how come, hitherto, we cannot come up with one national school for all, instead of having Sekolah Kebangsaan, Sekolah Tamil, Sekolah Cina, Sekolah dan lain lain, and start whining about how this generation is not muhibbah?

What bloody muhibah are we talking about when our children are separated from each other even before they hit puberty. How come only in malaysia we put up with such rubbish???!!!!!!!

Let's not bother on the roots of racism...Let's all talk about the consequence of racism..how some malay teacher pass remark about indian students, or that stupid megalomaniac Ahmad fler...don't know how such human beings can actually still exist in this century... they are only the product of our system...why not get to the root of problems? It's like keep on refilling water in a leaking tempayan and not fixing the leak...

The question to be answered here is, do we really want muhibbah? If we sincerely do, then start creating a next generation of muhibbahs..start by full reconstruction of our education system. Otherwise let's all shut the fuck up and continue this bloody hypocrisy....Muhibbah my ass...it's only a few of us sincerely screaming muhibbah..it's like screaming at a void in the universe..poooooooorah!!!

Believe me or not, ask any Singaporean. They knows once Malaysia people (read people, malays, chinese, indian, dayak etc) realise how much harm UMNO/Madhathir has done to the nation and vote out BN finally, Singapore will face the real challenge from us. I live in Spore more then a decade and have Malays as neighbor and colleague. They are marginalised? Come on, they even look down on Malaysian Chinese OK? They know we will never succeed if BN still in power. Wake up if you still think that having petronas twin tower in the middle of messy, congested and dirty KL city a glory symbol of sucess, people is laughing at you ok? That includes Malay from Singapore.

I believe what TDM were saying are the main justification to current race base politics ...

To those who champion the Malaysian Malaysia must also championing this same issues...You mast also propose one school with one language as the national language...since we all(Malay, Chinese, Indian, Iban, Melanau, Bidayuh, Org Asli, Kadazan, etc) understand and able to converse in Bahasa Malaysia.

There will be other's who disagree with his opinion but attacking Mahathir with names and racial slander to the malays will just show that all of you are not only racist but hypocrites...

we all know that we are multi racial..one will never convert race..but you may convert religion..Being racial and racist are two different things...

According to Dictionary.com, Racial is an adjective of, pertaining to, or characteristic of one race or the races of humankind.Being racial is that you are defending your races or championing the rights.

But people with racist beliefs might hate certain groups of people according to their racial groups...And that's where all the harsh words come in with a mind of hatred towards other racial group.

There's no problem of championing your rights but be very careful for not insulting other races during the process...

We have to learn to respect other people differences so that it is mutual, trust is mutual.

Don't ever prejudice to each other. Learn to love each other..

Patrick... I'm frustrated by your writings... I used to love your personality before, but since i encounter you blog...it's just showing me what an actual person you are...

Same to those who sparks any racial sentiment might it be in the speech or forum or whatso ever...Once started the other party definitely will retaliate..vice versa...this is not good for multi racial country...

You should not excite the racial hatred posting in your comments as this is not good for multiracial country..but then again being biased you will say this is the freedom of expression whereof when it is "sensitive" to your race..such a big Hoo Haa and NIAMAH will come out of your mouth and blog.

As long as people like you, Patrick and Ahmad Bukit Bendera don't change the mentality, untill then we will never hope to see a really muhibbah and equality Malaysia...NIAMAH ur head

Know the Difference: Transition, not Handover.
For the moment, the UMNO leadership crisis appears to have been averted with the announcement of the cabinet portfolio swap between Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and his Deputy Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Razak. As recently as last week, analysts and commentators were anticipating Najib to make a move on the Presidency before the year’s end. And why would they not? After UMNO Vice President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin rekindled the debate about Abdullah’s position, Najib appeared to position himself for an assault on the post when he remarked that the divisions should decide for themselves when the transition should occur – essentially informing that he was more than ready to receive nominations for the post of Party President.

But with the portfolio swap, Najib may not see a need to gun for the Presidency – and by implication Premiership of the country – so soon. Notwithstanding the fact that a transition of power is, as Abdullah quipped, a process and not something carried out overnight, Abdullah must be credited for such a bold move. Skeptics have characterised it as a calculated political decision to neutralise any potential threat from Najib. Political considerations there definitely were, but by paving the way for Najib to take helm of the Ministry of Finance, Abdullah has also demonstrated magnanimity and sincerity to groom his successor for the top job in 2010.

Being Prime Minister with little experience in managing the country’s economy will likely prove a mammoth task for anyone. And as it turns out, Najib is no ordinary figure with an ordinary past. With ample ammunition for the Opposition to take aim at his credibility – the SAS (Sukoi, Altantunya, Submarine) scandals spring to mind as illustrations – a Najib administration could use a head-start in spearheading economic recovery at a time when global financial uncertainty is affecting countries in this region, too.. It is further also to Najib’s convenience that the Budget for the year 2009 has just been announced with much of the implementation left for him to oversee. As such, Najib does not have the baggage of others’ inefficiency to contend with – a prevalent concern whenever an economic plan is carried out.

As things, at least for the time being, cool down with regards to any contest for the Presidency of UMNO, it would be interesting to see Tun Dr.. Mahathir’s next move. Commanding a yet formidable following, his end-game for quite a while now is to unseat Abdullah as Prime Minister. His peculiar friendships with Tengku Razaleigh, Muhyiddin and Najib are telling – those individuals are all nothing more than instruments to his ultimate goal: the downfall of Abdullah.

Ultimately, Abdullah’s supporters will hope that the PM’s move will be repaid with loyalty by Najib. Even to many who may not be Abdullah’s biggest fans are wary of the damage that an open contest will cause the party. Even they would gladly take two more years of Abdullah over the prospect of an internal split that will likely occur should we witness a repeat of the embarrassment suffered by the late Tun Ghafar Baba at the hands of a ruthless Machiavellian by the name of Anwar Ibrahim.
