Pat,

This is typical of some of those "Academic Theoritical Nerds" talking about the "Real World" which they have lost touch with...

Charity begins at home, right?

Are his children/grandchildren responding to his advise & doing all that???

Can we know if his children are doing what he proposed. Or are they all overseas getting an education.

The Baby Boomer generation could not relate to Generation Y.
Simple as that!

The rest is simply talking cock, the politician way.

Don't be surprised with that statement because he is still living in sixties.

These dinosaurs are so out of touch. I wonder if they really have ever sat down with their own children to talk, share, interact and bond with them. Perhaps if they did, they wouldnt suggest such poop ideas.

MCA has asked Barisan Nasional leaders to stay away and not participate in tomorrow’s May 13 anniversary celebration. Who are these Barisan Nasional leaders that MCA is talking about? Is not Umno also in Barisan Nasional? Is not Umno, in fact, the head honcho of Barisan Nasional? So do these Barisan Nasional leaders that MCA is talking about include Umno leaders? How can Umno leaders stay away and not participate in tomorrow’s great celebration when Umno is the organiser?

MCA has totally lost its dignity. Parti yang sudah hilang maruahnya.

Loitering has got nothing to do with playing carrom, jamming and exercising... Loitering to me is ok, the teens love to be seen, may be just like us adults too.

Respect is the key,, teens need to feel respected too

The learned professor should also include the following light activities:-

1) learn how to out-run the police in high speed car chase situation without being shot dead

2) learn how to out-maneuver the police on a highly modified Honda/Yamaha/Suzuki kapcai without being shot at

3) learn how to remain afloat when thrown out of high rise buildings by the 1PDRM, 1MACC or any authorities associated with the "1"

4) learn how to fix face to face appointments with the 1PM, 1PIG or any high ranking 1Person to seek advice on scholarships and sodomy charges (I propose Shitful to be the key lecturer/tutor)

5) learn how to be a 1UMNO politician and enrich oneself while proclaiming to help one's own race (I propose any 1UMNO politician or Ipariahim Alee to ge the guest lecturers/tutors)

6) learn how to be ultra racist (i propose the Master Racist pseudo Indian-Malay ex-PM to be the key lecturer and ably assisted by Ipariahim Alee)

7) learn how to be avoid prosecution by declaring "I don't remember" or "tak tahu" at the appropriate time

8) learn to avoid being killed in 1PDRM or 1MACC custody

seems like we need a centre for those "elites" to gather together - for light activities for self-improvement purpose.

Its not funny. You should cry instead.

The so-called professor did not really believed what he said. He said it for political purpose and because he did not really care about the issue or the young people. Hell, he does not care for you, me and fellow Malaysian, neigbour, society. He care for himself, his family, maybe a couple of mistrees, his cronies far above anyone else.

His attitude in most BN politician, much of civil service, key institutions and rule our lives. His words basically says F*** you all..

Should you laugh or cry?

i think he means those who are not the starbucks-type.

those who loiter around in the kampungs, with no starbucks etc... these children tend to lepak. they ain't got no internet, no mobile phones etc...

while i hate this guy (oh-so-deeply), i think he has his audience and we shall not jump to conclusions too soon.

he was not referring to, say, kids in those affluent areas like taipan or sri hartamas. he was, i think, referring to those poor malay/asli chaps in the kampung pendalam where some have not even seen a cinema/starbucks outlet.

Hey, I am 55 and although in my teenage years I did all those stuff he has suggested, nowadays I am into PS3 and iPad, etc...com'n, times have changed! Get the kids into more high-tech stuff where they can learn as well as play. If older guys like us can use computers and high-tech gadgets easily, what would you expect young kids to play with nowadays? Hell...I even enjoy playing PS3 games with my grown-up son!

gracieq said...

For once after following your blog for so long, I do not see eye-to-eye with you on this.

I think playing carrom, jamming or exercising is a healthy lifestyle which can be embedded into the teenagers. Those are just mere suggestions that need not be taken literally. There are many forms of exercise - sports for instance. And I think it's such a shame that not many people know how to play carrom anymore. It's almost akin to the death of snakes and ladders or something along those lines.

Aiya bro Patrick, we shouldn't laugh at this UKM prof. Are not all Malaysian profs of the same calibre ?
We should instead laugh at the stupid journalist who directed the question at him. He should have gone to Putrajaya and pose the cleverest village idiot there that same question and he might have got a cleverer answer.

Why are Malaysian journalists so stupid ?

Have community centres. Yes!

Put on the thinking caps. Yes!

How to engage youngsters to recreate meaningfully?

How to develop their self-esteem?

How to facilitate their individual giftedness?

What resources do they need?

How to provide these resources?

Who can spend time and attention to mentor them?

How to manage these centres so that youngsters can benefit from the facilities and opportunities made available?

Can Prof Khaidzir spearhead a high-powered team to bring a good suggestion to a working model?

Imaginative thinking may provide some leads.

Go beyond niamah!

Cheers people!

Honestly speaking, it's not easy to overcome social issue such as loitering, etc. (if one ever perceives that loitering is sickening). How?

ICON2008 said...

anon 5.30pm,

what do you mean people of my kind are still existed? what's wrong with my comment? did i commit any wrongdoing? is it even a sin if i perceive things differently from others?

i see no reasons why the professor's suggestions should not be taken as preventive steps for arresting the loitering problem.

if you read and think carefully about some of the comments posted here, do you even think that it is realistic to equip community centres with ps3 and other sophisticated gadgets? they are after all still very expensive although they are catchy. unless some of you are more than willing to give away your sophisticated toys to the community centres in order to solve loitering problem amongst teenagers.

-hiding under anonymity is an act of cowardry-

Anonymous said...

In UKM, the community centres are the padangs and below the stair-cases at night. The activities range from light to heavy. It's the same activities in UITM & dozens of local campuses in Malaysia.

Anonymous said...

Firstly, where's the centre gonna be & how many..?

You think youths wanna go to these boring centres when there ARE more happening places......?

Hello...! Go do a survey first la..! Interview for more info.

Better still ask your own children if they even know what a carrom....!!!

Anonymous said...

Maybe he's thinking of getting funds to build many community centres, buy carrom boards, jamming equipment and exercise machines (that nobody will use) so that he could pocket some % of the funds.

Not a bad idea after all.

ICON2008

Are you not also anonymous ? Be a bit clever lah in what you say.

Anonymous said...

Ask yourself why would you support BN when they have corrupted guys like Toyol?

niakong said...

Don't take it so seriously, the professor didn't really mean what he said. He was just suggesting another money-making avenue for the people-in-power.

You see, the acquisition of "suitable" places, the compensation for "compulsory acquisition", the building and renovation work, the setting up and equipping the centres, the purchase of the play pieces, the admin and running of the centres, the promotion, the roadshow, etc, etc. They all involve monies and at inflated ones some more.

He is smart, isn't he? It's just that he has a poor plot for that.

Anonymous said...

Aiyah folks, why get so worked up? The good professor is actually referring to Perkosa and Gertak members who have nothing better to do than loiter around the PKR's office burning effigies or shouting ketuanan here and there or bangkit this and bangkit that all the time.

I agree with the good professor that more Guantanamo type community halls be built for these Perkosa and Gertak members for them to play condoms, jamming each other's arseholes or exercising their vocal chords to continue shouting their ketuanan.

Anonymous said...

Yes... lets play scrabble, snake & ladder, checkers, chess, carrom (ops.. this idea was taken by the UKM professor), origami, marbles, fly kites, congkak.....
This way we can promote 1Malaysia.

By the way, I like caroom... hope it will be a Olympics event in 2016.

of course i'm not anonymous. you can view my profile. you can send emails to me. heck! one of my email accounts even reveals my true name. you're are the one who needs to be clever a bit.

the professor also suggested jamming and sport activities besides playing carom, didn't he? so, how do we know that they are not catchy? how do we know that youngsters will become bored by involving in any of the activities.

if they don't know what a carom is, they can be told or taught about what the carom is. before we carry out a survey, we should not jump into the conclusion. otherwise, there's no point asking others to carry out the survey. do i make myself clear?
