Our birthday or their party?

A reader sent me the above photo captioned "larger than merdeka itself, bigger than Ben Hur"

All hail the Prime Minister!!!

Transcript

On the front page of The Star today there is a big colour photograph of some rehearsals for some Merdeka Day celebration in Bukit Jalil Stadium I think. When I looked at it what caught my eye was the big image of Najib Razak which was projected on the giant video screen like it was the centre-piece and the reason for the celebrations.

That reminded me of the week when I happened to be in Singapore during the run up to their National Day. Just like here there were banners and billboards all over the city proclaiming the nation's upcoming birthday. And as usual the politicians faces were very much a part of the publicity. Lee Kuan Yew, Lee Sien Loong and all the other PAP members of parliament. But I couldn't help but notice that unlike here in Malaysia the Singaporean national day publicity involved the most important element of the celebrations. The people who built the country. Yes, the ordinary Singapore citizens. The politicians were in the photos on billboards. But they were always in the background or right in the midst of the people they SERVE. Never standing alone. Here in Malaysia our political leaders seem to take the credit for everything. Our national day celebration looks more like a celebration of the prime minister's ego. There are many other examples. Tourism posters featuring a photo of the minister of tourism instead of Malaysia's tourism attractions. Billboards calling for national gratitude for the progress we have enjoyed since independence but featuring photos and images of all the prime ministers. So what are we, the ordinary, hard-working, loyal citizens of Malaysia? Chopped liver?

Niamah!!!

Patrick,

Years ago, Pakistan president Zia Ul-hag decreed that all pakistan postage stamps must bear his face potrait. Soon all the new stamps with his face potrait were sold out in no time and he was extremely happy thinking he is so popular with the Pakistan people. It was later revealed that the Pakistan people bought all the stamps so they can spit on his face since it is on the front of the stamps. Needless to say, there weren't many letters delivered with the stamps turned inside out.

Is our PM suffering from the same delusion that he is the most popular guy around?

Aiya Bro Pat

Why you so silly wan ? This one for the simple folks lah, the peasants to be more exact. Give them a little bit here a little bit there and they are happy. After all they all very simple one, very easily conned ,very easily bought. They can only see the tip of their noses and their noses are not trained to sniff out the rot behind cheap facade.

Aiya Bro Pat, if they are as clever as you , Malaysia today would already be a developed country with high income like S'pore. Malaysia very sway lar, the leaders very low quality one, they only know how to shout, yell and threaten but don't know how to plan for the prosperity of the nation.

This gathering at the stadium is only a side-show. The real show is outside the stadium where the nation's wealth is plundered. I wonder how much of the cost of holding this gathering is actually use.

Aiya, fed up alredi, dowan to talk anymor, let us all go to pray to the cannot-mention-one for guidance. Maybe he can help arrrh.

Patrick, you are spot on. Have always been peeved at sights of banners, buntings on these politicians' faces. Ada gaya, tapi tak ada mutu (menjadi wakil rakyat kami!). Anyway, have you also wondered why Malaysian politicians always so FREE one ah ... everytime PM or DPM fly off, they all troop to send him off, or come to airport to greet him? All at taxpayers' money (travel claims, etc - no work meh?). We don't see this happen whenever Lee Hsien Loong fly off overseas for official duties. Damn, even Obama carries his own briefcase up Air Force One, no politicians waving him off at the tarmac !

HAHAHA. Uncle Pat, if you carry on blogging like this, very soon someone's gonna tell you to balik where you came from, call you ungrateful, stirring racial discord etc etc :P

A little song from Gretchen Wilson that pretty much sums up what I feel about the coming Merdeka day as an infidel and 'Pendatang' after events that have passed.

"I don't feel like loving you today,
So don't you even try to change my mind,
The best thing you can do right now,
Is just go away,
Cause I don't feel like loving you today,

I don't wanna talk about last night,
I'm angry and I haven't had much sleep,
And I'm so tired and bloodshot,
they ain't no tellin' what I'd say,
I don't feel like loving you today,

But you know I will anyway,
Even though we make it hard sometimes.
I'll wind up forgiving you and probably loving you,
For the rest of my life,
But I don't feel like loving you today,
And I've got 16 hours left to go.
I might tell you that I'm leaving
Even though you know I'll stay,
Cause I don't feel like loving you today.

But you know I will anyway,
Even though we make it hard sometimes.
I'll wind up forgiving you and probably loving you,
For the rest of my life.
But I don't feel like loving you today.

I just don't feel like loving you today."

Actually they wanted to do the laser thing skyward...more 'canvas' so to speak but then why tempt fate cause the heavens might just open up and 'cry' thus spoiling the event because his mug shot became the catalyst to induce rain! And we have always known that each and every poster that that powersthatbe approve and put up always have their mugshot in the forefront and seldom the common people. Nevermind, makes it that much easier to 'parade identify' them for 'crimes and misdemeanor' against the people! NUMBNUTS!

Dear Patrick,

I have often disagreed with a lot of your posts; I find many of your complaints unnecessary but as for this one, I must agree with you. I am seriously lacking the Merdeka spirit, I dont see any cars having flags either. Instead, politicians appear to be honored for ol Merdeka day.

Anonymous said...

Rais, should we now fly the Malaysian Flag or Najib's poster?

Is 1Malaysia following China's Tiananmen to have the large portrait of its leader oon the building? Are we adopting the communist ideology in this aspect?

Such idol worshiping is permited by Islam?

Anonymous said...

Patrick,

Soon it will be compulsory for us "chopped livers" to bow in front of this such banners honouring our esteemed leaders when we pass by them. Otherwise we will become "canned chop liver" and shipped out to China and India to be consumed.

if u go to Tiong Bahru GRC, the so-called Father of "Ultra-Kiasu" (term used casually by Rid Tuan T) Senior mentor Lee Kuan Yew is pictured with the residents there (big billboard) of various races. Our PM seems able to stand on his own so we just sit down and relax/lepak.

Ego Man Ego, Looks like they are following the communist country's culture of honoring their leaders.I do not mind if it is our King's Photo, but not our elected representatives who are egoist, arrogant and corrupted. 1Malaysia would not work from the bottom up. It only works when the top people themselves showed some sincerity in their motto, work with PKR, work with other non-bumi race would there be a spirit of 1Malaysia.
The month the PM is going about slogan-ing 1M, the more his bunch of monyets are making the mockery of themselves with this 1M thing. By not suppressing senile and obsolete monyets like Pekasa's bunch, it indirectly shows the factions that the BN or UMMO themselves are dealing with.
You don't see the chicken-ed out Gerakan helping MCA to build a strong race-d coalition. Much more less to say about MIC who's internal squabbles is yet to be doused.
Putting posters with self pictures etc. is only self glorifying and a false sense of assurance.
If the rakyat themselves, pool-ed out their own monies to make a big posters, and celebrate 1M with lots of self sponsored flags, then I would dare to say 1M works.
For one you know, such posters are made as a desperation attempt to drive the slogan..unfortunately, it should portray the faces of Malaysians young and old. Not glorifying our politicians in such a way. It only reflects to the Rakyat how silly it was to spend so much ringgits to do such posters that have no positive impact at all.

Uncle Pat.
This has nothing to do with your post. However, I would like to share with everyone a JOKE I found on the Teoh Beng Hock's case.

Ps. Please put up a chat box Uncle Pat. I find it hard to inform you.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNKMH_2EQIw

Then consider:
1. The ridiculous speculation being made by the lawyer on Teoh's death.

2. The statement made 'after 3:30 there's no reason for anyone to harm the deceased' (does it means before 3:30 everyone got reason to harm him?)

Wish Uncle Pat will made a post on this. It would be an interesting post =)

In the current political climate, non-Muslims will be accused of all sorts of reasons, regardless of whether you are trying to foster closer ties with the Muslims or you ignore the Muslims. In short, whatever you do, you are definitely "wrong", even in the month of Ramadan that preaches tolerenace.

The public cynicism about Najib’s political will and leadership after 16 month as Prime Minister in his various policy pronouncements because of the large gulf between proclamation and action has culminated in Merdeka month celebrations this year with the theme “1Malaysia transforms the nation” highlighting the failures of Najib’s 1Malaysia rather than celebrating the new Prime Minister’s signature nation-building programme.

The question now is whether Najib can inspire confidence in time for National Day on Tuesday, August 31st in his “zero tolerance” policy for racism by taking firm and decisive action in the next 60 hours against racists who had created inter-racial misunderstandings and tensions in the past weeks?

“The 1 Malaysia concept has been twisted by some who say that it is about equality,” Perkasa chief Datuk Ibrahim Ali told reporters today.

“We urge the prime minister to explain the 1 Malaysia concept. It is a concept that must be based on the constitution, on Article 153,” he said, referring to the part of the federal constitution which states the special position of Bumiputeras and allows the government to set quotas for educational institutions, government jobs, and permits.

DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang had also questioned yesterday the effectiveness of Najib’s 1 Malaysia policy given the spike in racially-tinged incidents, with two school heads allegedly spewing racial slurs against the Chinese and Indian communities.

Umno is so desperate that they need to pull out every trick in the book to ‘unite’ the Malays. And the only way to unite the Malays is to create an anti-Malay/anti-Islam bogeyman. And that is why the race and religion rhetoric has been stepped up of late -- since the March 2008 general elections.

A non-muslim goes to a surau with an olive branch and good intentions. But the Pharisees pick on this hapless politician. A Malaysiakini report says she is going to apologize to the Sultan. Why? What has she done wrong? This is an example of a regressive approach and political opportunism: the nit-picking and making a mountain out of a mole hill to score political points. Sadly there's too much of it.

Josh said...

Dear Patrick Teoh,

As for banners with pictures of PM. Its done by the Corporate Sector for obvious reasons. It was never once a requirement by the PM or Government.

Yes, i believe that our National Day should be for All and not just a government propaganda but really it was your generation that long kept quiet about all these things and suddenly one fine day as the general election of 2008 you people get one bright spark which cause the Political Tsunami.

We children of the 80s suffer of injustice and utter discrimination because our parent's and grandparent's generation kept quiet and majority of them were hard core BN supporter, come what may, they were all for BN.

If this keeps on going on, sooner or later we'll be just like North Korea. I don't see Americans putting Obama's face during independence day or the French putting Sarkozy's during Bastille day. We are celebrating our independence day not a day of Najib worshipping. That one we can just leave it to the pembodeks.

Wonder why in our beloved country, Australia, we never see any politician's face on display during national celebrations of any kind? But ordinary Aussie folks of all colours, gender and built are on display as the national pride. Now, this is what I call a civil and intelligent country. Like we used to say here, Fuck the politicians, they are only as good as anyone doing the right thing by the people! Otherwise, fuck them if they can't take a joke! Niamah!!!
