Sensitivities

I have just learned from a friend's Facebook page that this Hari Raya commercial has been pulled off the air as it was deemed offensive to certain "sensitivities". You watch for yourself and decide if you're offended or even if you have such "sensitivities". This will make Malaysians miss Yasmin Ahmad's festival commercials so much more during this season of love, understanding and forgiveness. Sigh...

Here is a report in The Malaysian Mirror about the reasons for the ban. You can also read from the Internet reactions from Muslims and others that resulted in the commercial being banned HERE.

And there is a comment on Harith Iskander's Facebook page on the reason/s why it was banned ....

Dzulhelmi Jumat you guys should look more detail, google the net why they all pissed off..there are very quick scene where one show quran page upside down..that part touch religion, not race..

My first impressions were exactly that. Christman reindeers, and Buddhist lotuses, and some Peter Pan magic dust.

Do you seriously think TV3 didn't know what it was doing?

Patrick,

Actually, I do agree that the ad be pulled off air.

The ad is brilliant, incorporating elements from all faiths and religions.

However, we as Malaysians should also be aware that being a "Hari Raya" ad, the elements shown must not be confused with elements from other religions. We just have to be understand the needs of the "other" religion.

Err...since when was Santa Claus and magic flying reindeer a part of Christian beliefs?

Santa Claus?
Dude... you got it wrong... its not because it looks like santa claus flying past windows... its because the Gomen is ANTI-ET! ET's around the world unite!

this screwed up country is full of stupidos and pathetic conservatives.. if this is offensive then executives and those who bomb the church should be given a death penalty a long time ago.. conservative muslims you all should go back to Makkah and run around your big black box..

I can't read Jawi. I would NOT object the removal if it is true that Quran shown upside down.

However the rest of the 'controversial' eg Santa, Pope, trishaw... are jokes to me.

What say if we replace trishaw with carpet?

Anonymous said...

Have they not violated MCMC and are they going give TV3 a show-cause letter and pull the plug on its license?

Anonymous said...

This advert is inappropriate and does not reflect the meaning of Ramadan. No right minded Muslim will even think of such a theme.

Christianity, Hinduism and Buddhism aside. How can you put a trishaw page together with a Quran page. Further a trishaw that flies is magic. Islam condemns magic as an act of blasphemy.

This is about the sanctity of Islam and has nothing to do about sensitivities.

To those who do not understand Islam or are not practicing Muslims please refrain from making statements that border on racism and that includes you the Joker of Malaysia.

Yasmin Ahmad should reflect on his Islamic values and repent to receive love, understanding and forgiveness from Allah.

Niamah back to you.

She could then quit showbiz for good to sell cars.

Looks like this is an opportunity for Muslims in this country to decide how liberal or conservative they, collectively, want to be.

If the liberals don't speak up to make their voices heard, then they will have to submit to the will of the conservatives. And vice versa.

Only Muslim Malaysians can decide which way the scales tip.

Hari Raya Aidilfitri is the sign of the end of Ramadan fasting month, and thus celebrated with the spirit of Ramadan. This advert seems way beyond what is should be. And incorporating a clear Christmas + Hindus etc in it is not something a good muslims can accept.

Binsar said...

what exactly is 'brilliant' about incorporating all those elements for a specific religious holiday ?

if it was to promote 1Malaysia, then yes, but if it's for a holiday or festive season for a Muslim event, what reason is there to have a "sleigh" ?

totally ridiculous - it serves no positive purpose than to foment the rabid opposition with no constructive criticism able to come from it.

Read The Star of 29 Aug page 3. There is a picture of duit raya packets which look like ringgit notes at a stall in Pekan Rabu, Alor Setar. Has the spirit of Aidil Fitri being lost ? Or is it for the chinese seventh month festival ?

Ai... ya.....Bro Pat, the director is so naive and should have known better - throw in some camels, desert landscape, date palms, minarets, people in prayers, etc. Most of all "think in the right angled squarish box." There is no room for IMalaysia creativity in our beloved country yet. Very sad. For that reasons, our creativity is imprisoned.

How can they have the crescent moon? That symbolises the Chinese moon fairy's abode. That becha rider looks too much like St Nick except that he is wearing a kopiah.
I agree it is too sensitive and thank goodness TV3 pulled it out quick, if not righting Muslim think that they are celebrating Wesak, Christmas, Thaipusam and Deepavali all rolled into one.
MCMC may need to carry out a full blown investigation how such a boo boo could have happened.
Bloody Sensitive.

Those that said this ad is "sensitip" had no idea where the hell is their "tip".

However...magic is needed if we are to become 1 Malaysia.

i'm no bigot but i just don't understand why the fuck you people don't just leave the muslims alone!...it's up to them what they consider distasteful or otherwise (in their world view)...

i mean we muslims don't give a damn if christians want to have gay church or whatever the fuck non muslims want to do with their religions... why don't we just fuck off and stay away from casting aspersion on each other's world view... respect!!! (as da Ali G would say)...

The TV3 Hari Raya Ad is good and original. But it did ruffle quite a few modern feathers. It showed Jawi upside down (some think it means Jawi is useless and irrelevant). It had a Muslim Father Christmas (Father Raya) who takes children on a flying trishaw drawn by buffaloes to his fairy land kampung above the hills. The fairy land has lots of floating flowers containing lights, floating ketupat and fireflies released from the flowers (all this implies that Archangel Michael can be depicted, and Raya can be re-sculpted into a Christmas-like mould complete with magical fairies, flowers and flying presents). And the mosque is ignored (it implies that the tenets of religion such as prayer are not relevant any more).

If I were the director and producer of the ad I'd just do 2 things differently. Make sure the Jawi is not upside down. Make sure Father Raya takes the kids around the mosque where they marvel at its beauty and greet the believers making their way there, before the Raya feast begins. Cheers from Dennis.

Don't think this ad is 'controversial'. It just lacks imagination and looks pretty stupid to me! Some ad agency ran out of ideas and decided all these elements represents 1Malaysia? Huh?

Anonymous said...

I consider myself to be quite a moderate / liberal (lord - how these terms have been politicised and made to sound almost dirty!) Muslim. And yet, I have to confess that when I watched the ad, my reaction was: don't we have enough of our own Malay-world material / our own cultural history of Islam in Malaysia to be fashioned into an ad for Hari Raya? Why do we have to copy - and the copying is so blatant - the Santa Claus myth for Hari Raya? Hari Raya is a culmination of a month of fasting, of prayers, of submission to Allah, of forgiveness. It's not so much an external celebration, but an internal celebration, of the purer self against baser desires. Hari Raya is also a time to renew ties with friends and family.

There are so many angles that could have been chosen for the ad, that I'm flummoxed why Santa Claus won as a theme.

I loved Yasmin Ahmad's ads, and may I say, she always mined from Malaysia's rich heritage and cultural surroundings to make her ads come alive.

So the ad elicited a negative rather than positive reaction, despite the beautiful magic elements.

And I really think some creative minds were being too lazy at TV3.

I would not have asked for ad to be pulled but I would have criticised it, for the reasons above. It just doesn't resonate with me, a Muslim, and does not communicate the significance of Raya.

I didnt see Santa, just a pakcik and kids enjoying themselves.

If anything it looks like ET flying in a trishaw, not Santa.

Lotus? Didnt even notice it.

Sensitive? Yes, I think the govt has already told us many many times already, the Malays are very sensitive people. The rest of the population not so sensitive one.

So if they are sensitive, we must not do anything to offend them. Ah, they also very easily get offended one (from what I have been reading in the papers).

How come they are so sensitive and so easily offended? I mean f they are so sensitive, should they also be sensitive enough to feel for others?

Those Chinaman's tradition must fire those loud fire crackers during CNY you know? How come, even with a culture so old and strong have to give up this tradition? I think maybe they not so sensitive ya.

I also think the green packet given during Raya must be stopped immediately.....like Ang Pow ah, dont you think so?

All the Raya celebration s also like X-Mas, so I think must make it law that shops must not celebrate. Just be normal, no decoration otherwise looks like X-MAS.

For anyone who doesn't know. Malaysia DO HAVE religion groups(德教會) that worship the equality of all mankind , and build temples comprising the symbols of five main religions (Taoism, Buddhism, Islam, Christian and Confucius). Link as below:

Kalau kita boleh buat macam ni, kenapa kamu tak boleh??

But I think you have no right comment about islam or the TV3 advertisement.

I have watched it, and I also knows its not compatible with Islam and Hari Raya. Dont mix up symbols of other religion. There is no need for Hari Raya Santa Claus.

Even Santa Claus is a MYTH and false character.

I support your other comments on other issues. But just SHUT up on Moslem issues, okey (as long as it does not trespass with other non moslem religions) thats for your own good and also the Image of non moslems.

When you give stupid comments like this and riduculing the pull out of the add... you end up damaging the rest of us....

But Raya in Malaysia is all about Ketupat !
I guess the concept of the 1Magical Raya is to have elements of the 1malaysia.Where all Malaysians from all beliefs and faith to celebrate the Hari Raya with their Muslim friends and families.

hey non-muslimers, In Islam, we hv very "firm, strict & solid" guidelines , all aspect from every angle are counts. in your religious, you can do 'this' & 'that' or whatever by just using your 'logic thinking'. Jump here & there as you like,... but for muslims there are very clear giudelines, said that which is 'white' & which is 'black'. means what we can do & cannot do. Pls don't compare with those muslim already in "grey" area, they already 'lost' track due to shallow knowledge in islam

You mean to tell me that the advertisement passed the censorship board?!?!? Also, there have been talk of the non muslims having a hidden agenda behind all that is portrayed as un-Islamic etc, etc. Hello, my protesters, please check up on who was the bloody idiot that came out with the idea in the first place, the director that filmed that, or better still who the bloody fuck financed and approved it for mass media!!!! If you DO find out, please direct your anger and revulsion at the appropriate person or persons. Please stop this trend of grouping all under the ''enemies of Islam' doing category' as I and many others are getting sick of this! AND if you do FIND OUT who is really responsible for this, I DARE you if you have the cahonas to name that person in public (and DON'T give us a bloody fucking scapegoat)!. NUMBNUTS!

I think our education system failed in the past and even today. We were made to memorize facts and then, "vomit" out from text books in our exams ! Not much of learning a subject base on practical lessons and really understanding a subject. Whatever a teacher says, that's it. Place the teachings in our brains and follow orders. No questioning over the wisdom of teachers.

When we grew up, the mainstream media were controlled by the government and we were exposed to "sugar coated" news and tend to believe whatever the media says. No questioning over the wisdom of mainstream media.

Things changed these days and we tend to look for answers in the cyberworld.

There are probably not enough of dialogues or platform to discuss about any religion in view that many leaders thought that by doing so, a lot of supposedly a noble idea will create tension among the many faiths of the people in this country.

Many 'issues' crop up like the "Allah" issue, a non-Muslim MP entered a mosque, "conversion" issue - Indian became a Muslim and when the person died, family members can't claim body, a Muslim lady was supposed to be caned and later witheld, the list goes on and on...

Probably, the ad. was suppose to show "elements" that represent the different faiths but misconstrued. Probably what TV3 did was right, apologize and get on with it.

Now that we know 1Malaysia or probably Bangsa Malaysia is way to go ! Still a lot of things that needs to be done ! Sigh ! What happened to the spirit of togetherness where I can call my Chinese friend, Cina Apek and he called me back, Melayu Ahmad and another friend, Samy Keling without animosity !

Looks like now, - 1Niamah !

This is actually way better than that sexist Raya advert about this Malay boy who didnt notice his tomboy-ish Malay girl friend, who had to get the boy's attention by dressing up as a girl. Politicians are...rather free to sit down and watch tv 24/7, arent they? I've never seen this advert until I saw your post.
